Milky Way

Milky Way Galaxy:

  In 1911, the existence of multiple galaxies was unknown.  The band of stars in the sky known as the "Milky Way" was of course common knowledge, and it was realized that we are within a disk-shaped object which became known as the Milky Way Galaxy.

   Since there was believed to be only one Galaxy, and that it was most of the Universe, the name "Milky WAy" was not often used.
